Internships

The Colorado Springs Philharmonic invites university students and recent graduates to apply for the following internships. No compensation is offered, but requirements for academic credit are happily accommodated. Candidates are evaluated on a rolling basis, with flexible start dates for fall, spring, and summer internships.

Communications/Marketing Intern

  • Skill set: Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ideal candidates will be in their junior/senior years majoring in Communications/Public Relations, Journalism, or Marketing.
  • What you’ll do: Get a hands-on introduction to the business of public relations and marketing communications. Work with supervisors on projects such as creating press lists, drafting media advisories, pitch letters, and releases, researching and analyzing targeted markets, measuring public relations impact and reach, event planning, social media strategy, video production, and other duties as assigned.
  • What you’ll learn: Gain experience in media relations, content creation, video production, event planning, market research and analysis, community relations, brand strategy and marketing communications.
  • Time commitment: 15 hours a week minimum, including concert nights
  • Application requirements: Résumé, cover letter, related academic coursework, two writing samples

Development Intern

  • Skill set: Ideal candidate is detail-oriented, MS Office-proficient, and has the appropriate self-presentation and poise for interaction with large donors. Must be a strong communicator who enjoys working in a group environment. Previous event planning experience a plus.
  • What you’ll do: Aid in grant research, donor mailings, research and outreach support for special events, data entry, sponsorship benefit support and organization; assist in donor hospitality lounge at concerts, deliver donor benefits, field calls from donors, and participate in department brainstorming.
  • What you’ll learn: Learn about the Annual Fund process, develop event-planning skills, improve grant writing, become familiar with corporate packages and presentations.
  • Time commitment: 12 hours a week minimum (three 4-hour days preferred), plus concert nights

Music Librarian Intern

  • Skill set: Ideal candidate will understand bowing markings and know how to bind music. Attention to detail a must.
  • What you’ll do: Assist music librarian in acquiring, filing, copying, maintaining and distributing sheet music for 75 musicians. Work on cataloging project under the supervision of the music librarian.
  • What you’ll learn: Get an inside look at the production of symphonic music. Exposure to a wide range of composers, compositions and musical styles.
  • Time commitment: 10 hours a week minimum
  • Application requirements: Résumé, cover letter, ability to lift 50 lbs.

Operations Intern

  • Skill set: Ideal candidate will have an interest or experience in stage management and a calm, cool, and collected attitude. Prior experience in stage management or technical theatre preferred. Music-reading a plus.
  • What you’ll do: Get hands-on backstage theater experience at one of the region’s premier venues. Learn stage management and orchestra management skills. Work as part of an efficient and positive team.
  • What you’ll learn: Learn how to manage monthly stage productions with a cast of 75+ performers in Southern Colorado’s largest concert hall. Excellent work experience for those pursuing careers in arts management, event management, venue management or orchestral music.
  • Time commitment: 10 hours a week + 4 hours on concert nights up to four times per month (varies with concert needs)
  • Application requirements: Résumé, cover letter, ability to lift 50 lbs., clean driving record, flexible schedule that accommodates occasional early mornings and many late nights

Patron Services Intern

  • Skill set: Ideal candidate has prior data entry experience, fast accurate typing skills, is detail-oriented and tech-savvy. Literacy in Microsoft Access and eTapestry, prior customer service or reception experience a plus.
  • What you’ll do: File paperwork and enter new subscriber accounts into database. Attend subscription campaign strategy meetings and participate in consultant calls. Field subscriber requests and supply information as directed.
  • What you’ll learn: Understand the strategy and implementation of large-scale membership campaigns for a prominent cultural institution. Acquire customer service experience and proficiency in a range of data-management platforms, including those that are common prerequisites for a job in the nonprofit sector.
  • Time commitment: 15 hours a week minimum, including concert nights
  • Application requirements: Résumé, cover letter, ability to lift 50 lbs.
