PROGRAM

Music and Math

The 2008 Colorado Springs Philharmonic Young People's Concerts will focus on the links between math and music. Music is a mathematical language, and math is a musical language. Despite the stereotype that musicians are right-brained "creative types," musicians perform far above average in math. Even non-musicians perform better at math after they've been listening to music!

Students will see the four families of musical instruments at the front of the stage, learn how those instruments work and the mathematical concepts that bring them together, and experience orchestral music from a mathematical point of view. It's a whole new way to look at the music that makes our lives better and the math that runs our world.

Music from Strauss' Fanfare “Stadt Wien”, Dukas' Fanfare La Peri, aff Sinfonietta, Hinton's/Spivak's Cartoon Music, Concerto Grosso in B Minor, Sousa's Hands Across the Sea, Haydn's Symphony No.4, Scherzo, and Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King.

DOCENTS

TEACHERS: Invite a docent, FREE OF CHARGE, into your classroom to lead students through listening lessons and activities featuring the music and composers for the upcoming concert. The docents are trained by Maestro Wilson and bring their own materials at no cost. Docent presentations are recommended for the ultimate learning experience and greatly enhance the student’s understanding and enjoyment of the concert. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity. Docents are scheduled on a first come first basis.

Please contact Roslyn Block at 884-2110 if you are interested in having a docent vist your class.
