Four Who Made a Difference for Great Music

The Colorado Springs Philharmonic announced its existence on March 17, 2003 - four days after the 75-year-old Colorado Springs Symphony filed for bankruptcy dissolution. In June 2003, four area foundations stepped forward with a challenge for our fledgling organization: prove that the community truly would support a professional orchestra.

As proof, the foundations' requirements focused on two essentials for our organizational success: $250,000 in season ticket sales (which would be escrowed) and $650,000 in contributions. The deadline was October 31. In return for our success, these foundations would provide a critical $325,000 in funding for our season.

The wisdom of these foundations was evident in these seemingly insurmountable goals: if the Philharmonic could muster this unprecedented level of community support, the foundations would generously "do their part."

We asked, and the community responded. By the deadline, an incredible $1,124,986 in contributions, including the foundation commitment, was in our coffers, insuring a successful inaugural season for The Colorado Springs Philharmonic.

The musicians, board and staff of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic thank these four foundations for their foresight, guidance and generosity who continue to be vital to the future success of our Orchestra:

El Pomar Foundation El Pomar Foundation

El Pomar contributes approximately $20 million annually though direct grants and programs to support Colorado nonprofit organizations involved in health, human services, education, arts and humanities, and civic and community initiatives. Spencer and Julie Penrose founded El Pomar in 1937.

Philharmonic Partners

The musical miracle that is the Colorado Springs Philharmonic exists in great part because of an unprecedented combination of donated dollars, services and initiatives from many business entities within our community.

A few deserve special recognition for their remarkable contributions in resources and services to the successful launching and continued thriving of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic:

The Gazette logo The Gazette
During the critical efforts to raise awareness of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic in the community's consciousness, this daily publication generously donated abundant advertising space to the Philharmonic. The Gazette's commitment to our local professional orchestra has only grown, continuing to enhance the visibility of the Orchestra.

KCME logo KCME
This independent public classical radio station quickly took a leading role in helping the Philharmonic to promote our concerts and our cause. Additionally, they generously made their studio and staff available to us for the production of our radio spots. This strong relationship continues in the current season and KCME and staff will always be found in the lobby during classical concerts. KCME is the sole broadcaster of the CSPO's recorded concerts and they will continue the beautifully produced series this year.

The Colorado Springs Business Journal and Dolan Media
Our mission to provide a superior program book for our audiences has been made possible in large part through a unique partnership with the Colorado Springs Business Journal. As publishers of Colorado Springs Philharmonic Magazine , their efforts have resulted in what we believe is the finest publication in American orchestral life provided essentially cost free to the Philharmonic. It is the product of a creative collaboration between the Philharmonic (editorial content), Katherine Townsend of Art Only, Inc. (creative graphic design) and the Colorado Springs Business Journal (printing, publishing and advertising sales).
