SUMMARY:Verdi / Tchaikovsky
DESCRIPTION:Unsuk Chin’s Cello Concerto sees the orchestra and soloist Hayoung Choi locked in a “psychological battle” in a surreal dreamscape where the listener is invited to make their own interpretation of what they hear. Bookending the concerto\, two powerful pieces from Verdi and Tchaikovsky that speak to one another with profound emotional depth. Tchaikovsky’s final completed work\, Symphony No. 6 “Pathetique\,” debuted nine days prior to his death. Verdi’s masterful La forza del destino Overture adapts musical themes from his opera of the same name to demonstrate the overwhelming force of destiny. \nJoin us for Colorado Springs Philharmonic Pre-Concert talks. Go behind the curtain and inside the score with these 30-minute pre-concert conversations one hour before the concert starts.

SUMMARY:The Inextinguishable
DESCRIPTION:Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4 “The Inextinguishable” was not named for the symphony itself\, but according to Nielsen refers to “the elemental will to live.” Composed during WWI\, the piece appeals to a fight for life during a time where so many perished in trenches across Europe. This same elemental will to live persist not only in times of pain\, but also during times of joy and struggles towards greatness. Svendsen’s “Norwegian Artist’s Carnival” welcomes listeners into springtime merriment while Sibelius’s Violin Concerto’s technical complexity demands the most of both the soloist and orchestra to bring the concerto to fruition. \nJoin us for Colorado Springs Philharmonic Pre-Concert talks. Go behind the curtain and inside the score with these 30-minute pre-concert conversations one hour before the concert starts.

SUMMARY:Rachmaninoff / Copland
DESCRIPTION:The Philharmonic’s Centennial Season concludes with music that moves from deep reflection to radiant optimism. Recovering from a three-year-long depression\, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 emanates with the hope of a composer who has rediscovered his muse and is overflowing with romantic passion. Copland’s Symphony No. 3\, though written during the last years of WW2\, is not a war symphony; instead\, it was meant to reflect the high-flying optimism of the U.S. in the post-war period. This same joyful energy emanates from Margaret Brouwer’s Pulse\, which alternates between explosion of dynamic rhythmic beats and anticipatory moments of calm. \nJoin us for Colorado Springs Philharmonic Pre-Concert talks. Go behind the curtain and inside the score with these 30-minute pre-concert conversations one hour before the concert starts.
