Act One – The Garden of Prince Siegfried’s Castle
In which Prince Siegfried’s hunting expedition has been interrupted by his mother, who insists on arranging a royal ball. Siegfried has come of age, and must choose a bride.

Act Three – The Great Hall of Siegfried’s Castle
In which Prince Siegfried encounters a maiden clothed in black. It is Odile, the Black Swan, heartless daughter of the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart. She tricks and seduces Siegfried, causing him to break his vow to his true beloved, the enchanted Princess Odette.

Act Two – A Lakeside
In which Prince Siegfried wanders from his hunting party and discovers a flock of swans. He is not aware that the swans are maidens transformed by Von Rothbart, who returns them to human form only at midnight. The Prince falls in love with the Swan Queen, Odette, who informs Prince Siegfried that she can only be freed by selfless and constant love. Deeply in love, the Prince promises to set the Swan Queen free of the vicious spell by marrying her. Watching from the shadows, Van Rothbart is determined to force the Prince to break his vow to the Swan Queen.
