Joseph Head

Joe Head has served as the librarian and principal bassist in the Colorado Springs Philharmonic since its inaugural season in 2003. Before that he was the librarian for the Colorado Springs Symphony (1994-2002.), and the principal bass (1986-2002).

He graduated from Weber State University in Ogden Utah with a bachelor of science in music education. He also earned a masters degree in performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music, Rochester New York.

During the summers he studied bass at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara California with Peter Mercurio. He also spent a summer at the Aspen Music Festival where he studied with Stuart Sankey. His most influential teachers have been Jamie Allyn bassist with the Utah Symphony, James Van Demark, Eastman School professor of bass, and Bruce Erickson and Audrey Bush.

His work as a librarian includes researching music, estimating costs, renting, purchasing and preparing orchestral parts for performance.

When not working he enjoys restoring his Victorian house, cooking, gardening, golf, and spending time with his wife Moira.
