The Center for Future Audiences and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic provided a vibrant pre-concert treat for patrons during the March 14th performance of the Grieg Piano Concerto. Specifically, fifteen student musicians from the Harrison High School Jazz Band took over the Pikes Peak Center mezzanine. Under the direction of Ms. Jessee Reon, these talented students provided a high-energy “toe-tapping” groove that set a perfect tone for the evening.
Starting at 6:30 PM, the mezzanine became a crowded hub of musical appreciation. Throughout the performance, Ms. Reon encouraged her students to step forward for improvised solos. Consequently, the young musicians had numerous opportunities to shine individually. The atmosphere remained light and joyful; for example, one student was overheard telling a peer, “Dude, that was awesome!” after a particularly impressive solo.
Furthermore, the jazz band continued their performance during the twenty-minute intermission. Many patrons approached the students and Ms. Reon directly to offer compliments on their skill. This interaction successfully bridged the gap between student performers and the local arts community.
Finally, Philharmonic CEO Nathan Newbrough recognized the band from the stage before the main concert began. He shared a personal reflection, noting that the band room felt like “home” when he was a student. He expressed his hope that the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and the Pikes Peak Center could feel like a home for these students as well. Subsequently, the students joined the audience to experience the artistry of guest conductor Michelle Di Russo and guest pianist Inon Barnatan. For many of the students, this was a special reunion. Just one day prior, Michelle had visited their school to coach the Wind Ensemble, making their evening at the Philharmonic a powerful conclusion to an inspiring week of music.
