Michelle Di Russo Leads Harrison High Masterclass

On Friday, March 13th, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and the Center for Future Audiences (CFA) brought the excitement of the concert hall directly into the classroom. Specifically, guest conductor Michelle Di Russo visited Harrison High School to lead a “Conductor in the Classroom” session. Under the direction of band teacher Jessee Reon, the Harrison High Wind Ensemble received a masterclass from the same artist who led our Masterworks performance of Grieg Piano Concerto this past weekend.

The morning began with significant local buzz. Major media outlets, including FOX 21, KKTV, and KRDO, arrived early to interview students about this unique partnership. Consequently, the room felt charged with anticipation before the music even started. Michelle immediately broke the ice with humor, jokingly asking the students why they were shy after being “media stars” just moments before.

During the session, Michelle focused her energy on a new piece of music. She moved through the score with infectious positivity and high energy. Furthermore, she paused frequently to provide specific coaching to different sections of the band. Rather than just giving directions, she asked the students for their own musical thinking. “No stress,” she reminded the ensemble, “music is for fun!”

The rehearsal concluded with a marked improvement in the ensemble’s sound. Subsequently, Michelle expressed her genuine excitement for their progress. Fortunately, this was not their final meeting. These talented students performed in the lobby of the Pikes Peak Center on Saturday before our Grieg Piano Concerto. Afterward, they headed into the auditorium to watch Michelle conduct the full Philharmonic. We are thrilled to bridge the gap between the classroom and the professional stage through these meaningful interactions.
