Center for Future Audiences: Nutcracker for a Day

The Colorado Springs Philharmonic’s beloved Nutcracker for a Day program reached new heights this season through a meaningful partnership with Centro De La Familia and Atlas Elementary School. Together, we opened the stage to children and families who had never before experienced the magic of the Pikes Peak Center, a live symphony, or the thrill of performing on stage.

Children Take the Stage
This year, four different children performed in each of our five Nutcracker performances. One young performer was so confident and poised that she returned to cover for another child who fell ill. Her talent and dedication inspired the Center for Future Audiences to sponsor her weekly ballet classes with our partner, Ormao Dance Company—a step toward nurturing her artistic journey.

Building Pathways in the Arts
As the program grows, we are seeking sponsors to provide scholarships for each child who performs. Our vision is to ignite a love of the performing arts and ensure every child has access to education in the field that excites them most. Future collaborations with Ormao Dance Company, the Colorado Springs Conservatory, and the Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale will expand opportunities, with CFA sponsors covering tuition costs.

Community Connections
Most of the families we partnered with were Spanish-speaking, and thanks to volunteers from Centro De La Familia and Philharmonic staff, translation and warm welcomes made the experience seamless. From costume fittings and backstage tours to playing the orchestra’s gong and sitting in the conductor’s chair, the children were immersed in every aspect of the performance. Their confidence visibly grew as they stepped into the Nutcracker’s party scene, embraced by their onstage “family.”

Moments of Transformation
One mother shared that her daughter, Edith, age 8, silently wept backstage at the sheer beauty of the snow dance after her performance—a moment that captured the transformative power of the arts. Each family received tickets to attend the Nutcracker together, plus four additional tickets to return for another Philharmonic performance, paving the way for new audiences and lasting connections.

The Center for Future Audiences is proud to champion programs that identify children who “belong” on stage and ensure they have the support to thrive. Nutcracker for a Day continues to light the path for the next generation of performers and audiences in our community.

The July 4th Star Spangled Symphony Performance has been postponed. Please check the event page for additional information.
