The Center for Future Audiences and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic continued their community mission with an exciting school visit. Specifically, on Thursday, April 23rd, Music Director Chloé Dufresne visited Russell Middle School in District 11. She worked closely with the school’s 24-member jazz band under the direction of Christopher Welch. This session helped the students prepare for their high-profile performance at the Pikes Peak Center this coming Sunday.
To begin the rehearsal, the ensemble performed “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing.” Furthermore, several students shined during their individual solos on the saxophone, trumpet, and baritone sax. Although this jazz repertoire is not her usual genre, Chloé jumped into the coaching with her signature energy. Consequently, she encouraged the flutes to play more prominently and helped the entire band master a sharper staccato feel. Additionally, she expertly identified an extra beat in the rhythm section, which helped the musicians achieve a much tighter, more professional sound.
Subsequently, the band moved on to another classic titled “Sway.” A talented saxophone player sang the lyrics as a featured soloist. Throughout the morning, Chloé remained animated and encouraged the students to listen to one another. Surprisingly, none of the students in the room had ever attended a Colorado Springs Philharmonic concert before today. Therefore, this Sunday’s D11 Spotlight Day will be a momentous occasion for these young performers.
Ultimately, these students will entertain patrons in the lobby before our Marsalis/Rachmaninoff concert on April 26th. Afterward, they will join the audience to watch Chloé and the full orchestra in action.
