Philharmonic Goes Galactic: The Empire Strikes Back Recap

The Center for Future Audiences and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic recently transported the Pikes Peak Center to a galaxy far, far away. Specifically, on May 8th and 9th, we hosted our final POPS concert of the season: the Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Live Cinema Experience. Both nights were completely sold out, drawing children, families, and patrons who were eager to experience the power of a live orchestra paired with this cinematic masterpiece.

Characters and “The Force” in the Lobby

The excitement began long before the first notes of the “Imperial March.” To begin with, the lobby was filled with fans of all ages dressed in elaborate costumes, from Jedi robes to Wookiee onesies. Members of the Mountain Garrison of the 501st Legion were on hand for photos, featuring Darth Vader on Friday and Obi-Wan Kenobi on Saturday. Furthermore, the Center for Future Audiences hosted a “Force” table where young Padawans used static electricity to levitate objects. Additionally, children received special “Rebel Alliance” programs to decode secret messages while learning real-life science facts that debunked movie myths.

Stargazing with CSASTRO

The celestial celebration continued even after the final notes faded on Friday night. Members of CSASTRO (Colorado Springs Astronomical Society) were stationed outside the Pikes Peak Center with high-powered telescopes and astronomical technology. Consequently, patrons were able to gaze at the actual planets and stars that inspired the film’s setting. The astronomers shared their vast knowledge of the cosmos and answered questions, providing a perfect, real-world conclusion to a night of science fiction.

A Show of Galactic Proportions

Ultimately, the weekend was a resounding success, filled with smiles and cinematic wonder. As the Colorado Springs Philharmonic musicians performed John Williams’ legendary score live-to-picture, the audience was reminded of the timeless impact of orchestral music. While this marks the end of our current POPS series, the adventure is far from over. We are already looking forward to February 2027, when we will return for Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Until then, may the Force be with you!
