Inspiring the Next Generation: Composer Eunike Tanzil Leads CFA Workshop

At the Center for Future Audiences, empowering the next generation of creative voices is core to our mission. On September 25th, the CFA and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic were thrilled to host Composer-in-Residence Eunike Tanzil for Part 1 of our Young Composers Workshop at Packard Hall on the Colorado College campus.
Roughly 30 aspiring student composers gathered from across the region—representing Colorado College, Pikes Peak State College, the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association, and Harrison High School—eager to explore the art of composition, refine their creative process, and learn what it takes to succeed in the modern music industry.
Inspiration, Innovation, and On-the-Spot Magic
Eunike kicked off the workshop by sharing her personal journey in music. She explained how her early passion for composing grew from taking fragments of pieces she was assigned to sight-read and reworking them into her own original ideas.
To demonstrate the power of spontaneous creation, Eunike invited a student to hum a simple melody—which she instantly transformed into a fully realized 30-second piano composition right before their eyes.
Beyond traditional technique, Eunike emphasized the importance of digital connectivity in a modern composer’s career. She shared how sharing her music online led to major collaborations with global brands like Samsung and acclaimed artists like Laufey—demonstrating how digital tools can help young creators build meaningful connections worldwide.

Collaborative Feedback and Student Showcases
The second half of the workshop shifted to hands-on learning, giving students the floor to present their own scores and original works. Attendees asked thoughtful questions covering software tools, instrumentation, and blending classical traditions with contemporary genres.
As student pieces were performed, Eunike provided personalized, encouraging feedback—offering practical advice on expanding musical structure, adding contrasting sections, and utilizing lyrical articulation to deepen emotional impact.
The hands-on demonstration left a lasting impression on the young participants:
“Watching her take a melody and then making it a full composition on the spot was an amazing experience!”

What’s Next for Young Composers?
This workshop was only the beginning! Participating students now have the opportunity to submit their original compositions for review. Eunike Tanzil will personally select several student works to dive into and workshop further during her next session with us.
