Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2

Copland Symphony No. 3

About The Performance

The Philharmonic’s Centennial Season concludes with music that moves from deep reflection to radiant optimism. Recovering from a three-year-long depression, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 emanates with the hope of a composer who has rediscovered his muse and is overflowing with romantic passion. Copland’s Symphony No. 3, though written during the last years of WW2, is not a war symphony; instead, it was meant to reflect the high-flying optimism of the U.S. in the post-war period. This same joyful energy emanates from Margaret Brouwer’s Pulse, which alternates between explosion of dynamic rhythmic beats and anticipatory moments of calm.
