There are few rites of passage quite as exciting—or as nerve-wracking—for a young dancer as stepping into an audition room. Here at the Center for Future Audiences, creating magical, hands-on pathways for young people is at the heart of everything we do. On Sunday, September 13th, that mission came to life as the energy at CIVA Charter High School became practically electric. 105 student dancers gathered to take a big leap: auditioning for the Colorado Springs Philharmonic’s upcoming production of The Nutcracker.
Nerves, Stretching, and Smiling Faces
Well before auditions started, families began arriving at CIVA Charter—who generously donated their space for the event. The gathering space was filled with the quiet rustle of dance bags, gentle stretching, jittery chatter, and supportive parents offering last-minute words of encouragement.
Around 1:00 PM, the very first group of young hopefuls—some as young as eight years old—lined up with numbers pinned to their outfits. Ms. Betsy, artist-in-residence at CIVA, offered a warm welcome and some encouraging words before the students filed down the hall, stopped for a quick official photo, and stepped into the audition room.
Height, Heart, and Hard Work
To accommodate the large turnout, the auditions were structured into four distinct groups broken up by height, running through the afternoon. While principal roles for the production are performed by the Oklahoma City Ballet and visiting students from the University of Oklahoma, these local youth auditions give regional student dancers the incredible opportunity to perform live on stage with the Philharmonic.
After putting their best foot forward, the dancers emerged from the audition room chatting excitedly with their families, proud of the hard work they put in.
The auditions were a resounding success, showcasing the remarkable talent, dedication, and heart of our local youth arts community. The dancers will find out their results in the coming days, and we cannot wait to see these young artists bring the magic of The Nutcracker to life on stage this holiday season!
