Building Stronger Arts Partnerships in Pikes Peak Schools

United by Creativity: Launching the Arts Education Symposium

This past Tuesday, the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region hosted its inaugural Arts Education Symposium: United by Creativity. It was a powerful day dedicated to strengthening the bond between our local schools and the vibrant arts community that calls Colorado Springs home.

The Center for Future Audiences was proud to participate in the “Developing Community Partnerships” session. Our goal was simple yet essential: to help educators build sustainable, meaningful partnerships with arts organizations that enrich the classroom experience.

Breaking Down Barriers

Joye Levy, Director of the Center for Future Audiences, led a dynamic panel discussion featuring leaders from the Ormao Dance Company, the Colorado Springs Conservatory, the Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale, and Columbia Elementary School.

During the session, Joye opened the floor to the teachers, asking a critical question: Why aren’t more artists making it into your classrooms? The conversation was honest and insightful, with many educators citing budget constraints as a primary barrier.

The panel responded with proactive solutions, highlighting the wealth of free programs currently available in our region. The discussion proved that when we bridge the gap between “what schools need” and “what arts organizations offer,” we create transformative opportunities for students.

Inspiring Stories of Impact

The panel wasn’t just about theory; it was about real-world impact. Joye shared a heartening success story about a student who experienced the Nutcracker for a Day program—a student who went on to become a dancer with the Ormao Dance Company and is now auditioning to be a student dancer in this year’s production. It was a perfect example of how one experience can spark a lifelong passion.

Following the panel, the symposium shifted to a networking session where educators connected with a wide array of regional partners, including:

  • Concrete Couch
  • The Fine Arts Center at Colorado College
  • The Colorado Springs Philharmonic
  • Millibo Art Theatre
  • Peak Improv Theatre
  • Dance Alliance of the Pikes Peak Region
  • Economic Strategolutions
  • EPIC
  • Imagination Celebration
  • (And many more!)

Looking Ahead

The “United by Creativity” symposium proved that the Pikes Peak region is a community that values its young artists. By fostering these professional relationships, the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and our fellow arts organizations are committed to ensuring every student has access to the life-changing power of the arts. We are already looking forward to how these new partnerships will blossom in the coming school year!
