America the Beautiful Premieres
Majestic Pikes Peak, known to the world as “America’s Mountain,” has inspired composers for more than a century, beginning in 1893 with a visiting Colorado College professor named Katharine Lee Bates. Her iconic poem, and later patriotic son, America the Beautiful, has become a touchstone for Colorado Springs, defining our city’s history and aspirations in terms of inspiring music and community spirit. The Philharmonic continues this tradition by commissioning new works from contemporary American composers inspired by Pike Peak. Throughout the Philharmonic’s 90th Concert Season, watch for world premieres of six interpretations based on the theme of America the Beautiful, presented at select Masterworks concerts.
